In a Blaze of Glory

You have to see safari sunsets for yourself. The sun gives up its day in a spectacular blaze of fiery glory as if to say “I won’t let you forget me!”  And you won’t.  Long after your safari is over, you will remember the breathtaking orange sunsets that held you in awe.

There’s another reason you’ll remember sunsets on safari. They call it: sundowners. There are thankfully few legacies of the colonial years in Africa that have survived, but this is one of the very best.

The ‘great white hunters’ of the Out of Africa era were very conscientious about taking their daily dose of quinine to counteract malaria. Fortunately, their forbears in India had invented a very acceptable way of doing so: in tonic water, properly laced with gin. Purely medicinal of course!

And what better time was there for them to enjoy their G&T than at the end of another hot day.  Hence: sundowners!

Sundowners on Safari Today

As you enjoy your afternoon game drive in the Linkwasha Concession on your Tasimba Safari, our Pro Guides will show you all kinds of incredible wildlife sightings. You will see many of the 100+ animal species and over 400 bird species that call Hwange home.  As the afternoon shadows get longer, the light becomes softer creating the most wonderful backdrop for picture taking.

And then, in some open area, your Guide stops the 4X4 and announces “Sundowner time”.  You clamber down from your comfy seats in the vehicle and stretch your legs.  The conversation is animated about some of the amazing things you’ve just seen. And you all watch the huge ball of the sun slipping down to the far horizon.

As if out of nowhere, your Guide puts your favorite drink in your hand – he’s learned from day one what your personal sundowner choice is!  Ice cold Zambezi beer, a glass of Chardonnay, Coke – or even the original sundowner, a gin and tonic with ice and a slice of lemon. You toast the day, the breathtaking sunset, Africa and all its wonders – and you toast the privilege of sharing the peace, the beauty and the serenity of this vast unspoiled wilderness.

Sundowners.  Just one of the hundreds of ways Africa etches itself in your heart on your Tasimba Safari.
