Resilient by Nature

“Look deeply into nature and then you will understand everything better.”

Albert Einstein

Since we can’t be in Africa with our Tasimba guests right now, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on what I’ve learned in the hundreds of amazing safaris that I’ve been on during my lifetime. I’ve ridden in jeeps and vehicles of all sorts, walked miles through the wilderness, watched wildlife from the water in boats, I’ve paddled canoes through crocodile and hippo filled rivers, and I’ve even been on a horseback safari. Yes, I know, I really have been incredibly fortunate and privileged.

Life lessons

What’s always been clear to me is that every one of those safaris has added something to a lifetime of learning. Just as I’ve discovered that the learning never stops in my professional career in leadership and as an executive coach, so too I’ve found there’s always something to learn on every immersion into nature.  All you have to do is to watch, to listen and, yeah, to pay attention. Nature is an amazing teacher – and she doesn’t take vacations!

In my professional leadership work, what has become so clear over the past 15 months and is vitally important for all of us to survive and thrive, is resilience. One of the best coping tools we can have in our arsenal when facing challenges, is the capacity to bounce back under adversity – in both our professional and personal lives.

Knowing how wildlife instinctively shows resilience, I created a fascinating presentation about wildlife titled “Resilient by Nature”. The feedback and comments have been amazing!

  • “Wonderful presentation! Awesome learning, passionately shared!”
  • “Incredible presentation”
  • “Your presentation was so insightful, incredibly interesting, energizing and impactful. Lots of fabulous takeaways for leadership and human interaction.”
  • “Outstanding presentation with meaningful messages”

Using examples from the African wild, I’ve been able to draw on both my wildlife and my leadership experience to identify useful takeaways from nature that will help all of us strengthen our resilience.

As we emerge from Covid into a changed and disrupted world, the need for resilience will continue to be essential for our own, our family’s and our business’s capacity to thrive.

Better still, if you’d like to inspire your organization or group to be more resilient, please contact me at hughcoppen@tasimba.com or (415) 805-8611 for a custom presentation.

Remember this: we came from the African wilderness where resilience is instinctive – it’s in the very nature of wildlife. Learning from nature, we too can also become Resilient by Nature!

“The wisest and noblest teacher is nature itself.”
